The Hudson family have lived the nautical life for over 50 years, with Russ sailing as a Merchant Mariner for 33 years. No box store can offer you such knowledge of the local fishing, to include sound advice on the best bait in order to succeed with the catch of the day. Always the Gathering Place
The Squidders Bait and Tackle store building has historically been the gathering place to find out what was, and what is, going on in Vandemere. It was first established as the Joe Morris General Store. Later it evolved into the Post Office and Town Hall. The building has now been known as Squidders Bait and Tackle + Lodge for over 8 years.
What is a Squidder?
A Squidder is a traditional term for a fisherman who uses squid as bait to catch all types of fish; but especially, for the big drum. Used by many anglers, squid bait has proven time and time again to be a great method for catching the big drum in coastal waters of the Pamlico Sound.
Owen Lupton's Original Old Drum Rig
This custom made, catch and release rig is used by experienced anglers who fish in the Pamlico Sound. Hand-tied and attached to various weights, the Owen Lupton Rig is designed for resource conservation; causing minimal harm for live fish release.
Squidders Club
The Squidders Club was a private fishing organization first formed in 1967 by Ernie Hudson (Russ's Dad) and James Newton. This club, their adventures, and the fruits of their fishing, was often featured in the local newspapers and national magazines such as Salt Water Sportsman, Outdoor Life, and Field & Stream.
